AWARD-WINNING ARTISTS LIMINAL UNVEILS NORTH EAST PROJECT – ‘HUM!’ »

As Futurescope enters its second year, our outdoor exhibition of eight massive, circular photos is really starting to gain momentum.  For our most recent installation, we’ve been lucky enough to attract award-winning artists Frances Crow and David Prior who work together as Liminal (yep… the ones that won the 2010 PRSF New Music Award – the richest award in the UK) and we can now unveil HUM!.

HUM! With Christian Barnes and our very own Tim Stephen

The thinking behind HUM!  is that it has the ability to help us all explore the relationship between sound and the environment.  HUM! is great onomatopoeic word for the sound that the turbine hall would have made and also a similar noise to that of the bees – introduced last year as part of our sustainability ethos –and finally -  a description of busy workers who would have been employed in the building at its peak – just perfect for us.

This is possibly the most challenging imagine used for Futurescope, but could also be the most exciting as we think it speaks volumes ( yep…. a pun intended!) about the passion for art at Lingfield Point.

The iconic image will be on show for the next three months, and whether people love it or hate it, one thing is certain – we hope it will certainly provoke discussion!

Glycerin Engine »

Over the last few months we’ve spent a lot of time investigating the best forms of low carbon fuels to power the energy centre which will be at the heart of our new sustainable mixed community at Lingfield Point.

We’ve been working with Kent based ‘Aquafuel Research Ltd’ who have developed injector systems which enable lighthouse diesel engines to be fueled with crude glycerin.

Glycerin is a waste by-product of many industrial processes including the manufacture of biofuels and as Teesside has one of the largest biofuel plants in the UK it seems an ideal fit for Lingfield Point.

The guys at Aquafuel explain how it works:

“Glycerin is a by-product of biodiesel production.  For every 9 gallons of biodiesel, 1 gallon of crude glycerin is produced.  Glycerin’s density and high oxygen content offer the potential of exceptionally clean combustion, with much lower emissions than burning diesel fuel.

“The technology opens up the potential for any liquid fuels, from ethanol to gasoline, to be burnt at diesel efficiencies.  The use of conventional, not bespoke, equipment means capital costs are comparable with conventional diesel CHP.”

In simple terms that means that if we are successful we’ll be providing low carbon, low cost energy directly to our customers’ offices and homes. With carbon reduction high on all companies’ agendas we think it’s another good reason to choose Lingfield Point as the home for your business.

It’s still early days but initial studies look promising.

Buildings – Part one »

Some of the buildings at Lingfield Point represent the most iconic displays of modernist architecture in the North East. Lingfield House, created as the grand entrance to the Patons & Baldwins’ empire is a prime example. With its striking modernist fenestration, twin sweeping staircases and glass and bronze chandeliers, the entrance hall is as grand today as it was when it first opened its doors in 1951. We’ve not had a visitor yet who hasn’t been impressed by the place. It was the first building to be revitalized, and we’re thrilled with the result.

Another building which occupies a special place in people’s hearts is the Beehive. When it was built it had a dual function – by day it was the staff canteen but at night it was transformed into a concert hall and venue of some of Darlington’s grandest parties.

When we (Marchday) acquired Lingfield Point in 1998 it hadn’t seen any investment for many years and many of the magnificent buildings stood vacant and crumbling. The estate was caught in a spiral of decline with no prospect of attracting new occupiers for the buildings. But over the last ten years we’ve invested more than £35m – and a lot of love – into the regeneration of the site.

We’ve worked tirelessly to change the perception of Lingfield Point, from the dilapidated industrial estate it had become into the thriving new business community it is today. We believe in celebrating the site’s industrial heritage and the visual reminders around almost every corner help strengthen the link between past and present.

Dreamcatcher – the Ball – a dream of a night! »

With over 45,000 sqft of open plan office space all one floor, Meadow plays host to many events, seminars and summits, but nothing quite prepared us for the glamour of St Teresa’s annual black tie ball – Dreamcatcher- recently.

Dreamcatcher - a spectacular transformation of office space

Hosted by Sherwoods, we joined forces with our main charitable partner St Teresa’s Hospice to provide the venue for this very exclusive event.  Over 350 people attended and were served a delicious 3 course meal, enjoyed music from imaginejack and the Dean Solomon Band who lit up the dance floor till the wee hours in the morning.

For those brave enough … a trip to a clairvoyant for either the runes or tarot reading was on the cards!  Guests could also make their way over to the variety of casino tables available.  Over £10,000 was raised on the night for the continued development of services at the Darlington-based St Teresa’s Hospice.

We’re now looking forward to planning the festive christmas cracker concert with St Teresa’s Hospice – always a sell-out with stunning performances from a vareity of different choirs in the Tees Valley  – tickets available soon!

To Autumn, John Keats

1820

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For Summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Well, the  summer’s over and winter’s on the way but at least Mother Nature is giving us a spectacular autumn.

There are more species of funghi around site than I’ve ever seen before, I just wish I knew if they were edible or not!  The berries are plentiful and I’m hoping it’s not a sign that we’re in for another snowy winter.

We’ve decided to listen to Mother Nature and am already thinking about the frosty mornings and bad weather ahead so we’ve just ordered load of rock salt to grit the roads and pavements around the business park – just in case.

What a lovely blog! I really enjoyed reading it. Is there anybody out there who can help Chris identify which of these beauties she can have for breakfast?

I really liked the blog entry too – made me want to pull on my wellies and get out and about! On the subject of mushrooms – what’s edible, what’s not? – I don’t think any of the varieties pictured are edible. I go out quite regularly with a French friend of mine who is an experienced forager and mushrooms are high on the list of the things we go hunting for.

Last weekend we went to Falling Foss woods near Whitby and snagged ourselves a kilo of Chanterelles amongst others(cost a fortune if we bought then in a store). The colours were beautiful and they tasted superb. It’s really really important though not to pick and eat anything that you’re not certain of! So don’t take any risks – sometimes just admiring the beauty of nature is enough as your pictures show.

How are the beehives and honey production going?

    Time for tea….bye bye

The natural way to BEE sustainable »

Here at Lingfield Point we believe in creating a bit of a buzz which is why we’ve provided homes for 20,000+ honey bees who are helping drive our sustainable and ecological initiatives. Bees have an immense impact on our environment, especially in food production, which will give our allotment plans a huge boost.

The beehives are a first step towards making this plan come to fruition (pardon the pun) and of course we get to over indulge in delicious honey. Did you know that one in three mouthfuls of the food we eat is dependent on pollination?

No, neither did we.

And did you also know that to collect a pound of honey a bee might have to fly a distance equivalent to twice around the world? That’s one hell of a work ethic! That information came from the British Beekeepers’ Association who also tell us that honey bees are dying out – it seems last year’s cool damp summer, a sharp cold winter, pesticides and a little mite called varroa are all having a detrimental affect on bee numbers.

The BBKA is now asking people to make a difference by sponsoring a beehive – but don’t worry about getting stung, you just have to hand over some cash and the guys at the BBKA will pay for research into honey bee health and education programmes for beekeepers. Oh and the site also has tips on what to do if you get any unwanted visitors either swarming or nesting. Click here for more information.

Twitter users interested in bees may want to follow helpsavebees and visit the website at www.helpsavebees.co.uk.

I tried out the “Canteen” at the start of a two week
contract with another Lingfield tenant. I have become a fan an hope
I get to work nearby in the future. A really nice cup of tea (
especially on “Thirsty Thursdays” when it’s just a pund for a
massive cup of tea) good quality food and a great atmosphere
generated by the courteous friendly staff. Always insisting on
bringing drinks and food to my table is a really nice touch and in
these tines such a rare demonstration of great customer service. I
love the retro corner too. Merry Christmas all.

Doing things differently – networking and events »

With over 40 businesses which equates to well over 1500 people, we try to create a home from home – we really like the idea of a neighbourhood atmosphere.  All our businesses understand their priority is their customer base but that doesn’t stop them getting to know their neighbours.

If you visit us at one our many events, you’ll always see so many of our customers – especially at our social gatherings.  Understanding each other’s business and of course each other, fosters a great relationship based on help, understanding , attention and care – the 4 cornerstones of what really makes us different.

Events around Lingfield Point range from one to one meetings that usually end up as a natter in the cafe through to our specialist seminars and briefings that help our businesses stay ahead of their competitors.   We lay on breakfast briefings; lunch time bite size basics through to large scale networking events.

Networking For Free - regular events help customers get to know each other

Our latest event, Networking for Free, was an instant success.  Set up in conjunction with Darlington Borough Council, the 47,000sqft of office development – Meadow – hosted over 40 businesses promoting their offer with over 100 other businesses attending and networking. Customers came to visit Meadow’s state of the art facilities, meet and network and experience the culinary delights of our latest café offer, canteen by Alexander MacMurray.

But its not just about business orientated events, our cafe runs a whole host of events and we’re just about wrap up the annual ball for St Teresa’s Hospice – a glamorous affair to say the least! Look out for the latest events and promotions here including Halloween, Children in Need and of course our Christmas festivities.

We’re a business park – but not as you know it  ….. We simply like to do things differently.
